JSS – Janadipathya Samrakshana Samithi was formed by veteran leader K R Gowriamma after a split from the CPI(M).
A minister in 2001 -2006  UDF Ministry, she is the widow of the Communist Party of India leader T.V. Thomas.
JSS is a member of United Democratic Front, the alliance in Kerala led by the Indian National Congress. JSS has four Members of the Legislative Assembly in Kerala (2001 -2006)
Janathipathiya Yuva Samithy (JYS) is the youth wing of the party.
