Indian National Congress
The Indian National Congress also called the Congress Party is the oldest and one of the largest political parties in India. Founded in 1885, it was the most powerful force behind the country's struggle for independence. Its main leaders were Gandhi, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi etc.
Also known as Congress -I where I stands for Indira.
Many groups broke away from the Congress. It is the major partner in the UPA coalition that rules the centre.
Its current leader is Sonia Gandhi, a political new comer and wife of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
